Little of his later output attempts to accomplish the interweaving sf and horror tropes (see Equipoise Horror in SF) in the manner evolved by either Stephen King, whose compelling sense of locality also stands out, or Peter Straub, whose cognitive panache distinguishes his work. He began his career with a number of sf novels but since 1975 he has concentrated on horror.
